The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, often referred to by its product name Botox®, is a popular non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck. The toxin blocks the nerve impulses, temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. Studies have also suggested that Botox is effective in relieving migraine headaches, excessive sweating and muscle spasms in the neck and eyes. The Botox Option in Orange County
The history of Botox is ironic in light of the fact that it is the single most popular cosmetic plastic surgery procedure today. Its chemical name is botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) – it is in fact a toxin that in large doses can be harmful. Researchers discovered during the twentieth century that Botox caused muscle paralysis and in 1980 was used on an experimental basis to treat strabismus, a muscle disorder associated with crossed or lazy eyes. In December 1989, BTX-A (Botox) was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of strabismus and facial muscle spasm in patients over 12 years old.
The use of Botox injections to reduce facial lines developed during the last two decades of the twentieth century. In April of 2002, the FDA announced the approval of botulinum toxin type A to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows.
FDA approval followed widespread introduction of Botox as a facial enhancement choice when it was put on the market by Allergen Inc. for both therapeutic and cosmetic use. Botox is used for the relief of migraine headaches, to reduce excessive sweating, and to help control muscle spasms.
Botox Leads in Facial Enhancement
Today Botox remains the most popular facial enhancement choice, with five million Botox injections performed by plastic surgeons in 2008. Other fillers or more invasive surgical options trail Botox use by millions of procedures. A total of one million hyaluronic acid injections (Juvederm, Restylane) were performed in 2008 – this being the second most popular minimally invasive cosmetic surgical procedure.
Botox injections are used to temporarily relieve frown lines, creases in the forehead and the “crows feet” that radiate from the eyes as the result of squinting. The medication has a temporary paralytic effect on the muscles that cause those creases, relieving the pull on the facial tissue and subtly introducing a smoother, more youthful face.
One of the reasons for the larger number of Botox treatments performed each year is the fact that it is a temporary treatment. Depending on the patient, after several months the effect on the facial muscles wears off and the injection process must be repeated in order to maintain the youthful look that was initially achieved. Botox Most Popular in the West
In a regional analysis of Botox use, 30% of all procedures were performed in the region that includes the West Coast and Mountain States. By comparison, the region including New York, all of New England and the Mid-Atlantic States were the locale for 19% of all Botox procedures.
In Orange County Botox has become a commonplace choice among thousands of residents. While the greater Los Angeles Area and the Bay Area have much larger populations, the percentage of women seeking Botox injections in Orange County is much higher than in the other California population centers.
In Newport Beach Botox treatments are provided by a number of professionals including some day spas that aren’t designed to provide the full range of cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures.
