The Breast Augmentation Procedure

Dr. Champion and her staff will take every precaution to prepare you for every step in the breast augmentation procedure. Your comfort and safety are our primary concerns. There are primarily five steps that are involved in the breast augmentation procedure, including:

The Anesthesia

Breast augmentation patients will receive anesthesia to bring comfort to the procedure. Dr. Champion will discuss options available for anesthesia at the time of an initial consultation.

The Incision

Newport Beach Breast augmentation by Dr. Champion is performed through an inconspicuous incision that may be located in one of two places, including: inframammary incision or periaerola incision. The inframammary incision is made under the breast along the crease. The periareola incision is made along the lower line of the nipple. Dr. Champion will review incision options that are appropriate for your desired outcome based on the type of breast implant you select, degree of enlargement you desire and your particular anatomy.

The Breast Implants

Breast augmentation utilizes saline or silicone breast implants to increase breast size. Dr. Champion will select a custom sized and shaped breast implant based on your personal preferences and a variety of other factors, including: your desired breast enlargement size, the width of your chest, your height and weight, the elasticity and thickness of your skin.

Breast Implant Choices

Breast implants do not impair breast health. Careful review of scientific research conducted by independent groups such as the Institute of Medicine has found no proven link between breast implants and breast cancer, autoimmune or other systemic diseases.

• Saline implants are synthetic shells that are filled with sterile salt water. Saline implants are offered in several different types of shapes, firmness levels and feel differentiations. An advantage of a saline breast implant is that if the implant shell leaks, a saline implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body. Saline implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women 18 years of age and older. Saline may be used in younger women in the cases of breast reconstruction.
• Silicone implants are filled with an elastic gel. The gel feels and moves much like natural breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket. This may or may not be noticeable to the patient. Therefore, an ultrasound or MRI is recommended in the years following the procedure to check for breast implant leak or rupture. Silicone implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women 22 years of age and older.

Breast Implant Placement

Breast implants are placed through the incision using a variety of techniques that are specific to patient needs. Breast implant placement involves the refinement of a breast pocket to be used to place the breast implants in one of two locations: sub-muscular placement or sub-mammary/ sub- glandular placement.
• Sub-muscular breast implant placement refers to breast implant placement under the pectoral muscle.
• Sub-mammary/ sub glandular breast implant placement refers to breast implants that are placed behind the breast tissue but above the pectoral muscle.

In the end, Dr. Champion will close the incisions with layered sutures in the breast tissue and with skin adhesive or surgical tape to close the skin. The breast lift may be performed in the same surgical session after breast implant placement or at later date once swelling subsides and breasts drop over time. Breast Augmentation Recovery

Breast augmentation recovery requires rest following the procedure, but patients usually return to most normal activities within a couple of days following the procedure. Dr. Champion will provide you with a list of instruction to follow for an optimal recovery experience. These instructions will include: medications to take, dates to return to the office, hygiene, care for incisions, and the types of activities to perform or avoid in the weeks following breast augmentation surgery.

The practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science. Although good results are expected, there is no guarantee. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure and another surgery may be necessary. In rare cases, complications may arise, but can be managed when immediately reported to Dr. Champion.

Rare complications include: unfavorable scarring, bleeding (hematoma), infection, poor incision healing, breast implant leakage or rupture, skin wrinkling, fluid accumulation, blood clots, pain, deep vein thrombosis, capsular contracture, or nipple and breast sensation changes that may be temporary or permanent.

The results of breast augmentation are immediately visible. Over time, incision lines will fade. Dr. Champion's patients have found extreme satisfaction with their new image and fulfillment of their goal for fuller breasts.

Of course, breast implants and your body will age over the course of your lifetime. Pregnancy, weight loss and menopause may influence the appearance of your augmented breasts. For these reasons, you may need to replace your breast implants years after your initial breast augmentation procedure. In the meantime, you can expect to have long lasting results that will allow you more choices in clothing and greater comfort when unclothed.
