Breast Implant Removal

Breast Implant Removal: Enhancement in Life

Breast Implant Removal, also known as revision breast surgery or secondary breast surgery, involves the removal of breast implants and possible replacement of breast implants to improve quality of life. Women interested in breast implant removal may request the procedure because they have aged breast implants, are uncomfortable in their breast size due to weight gain, experienced a complication that requires breast implant removal, or they may have a medical condition that requires implant removal. Contact us today to schedule your Newport Beach breast implant removal appointment.

Breast Implant Removal Procedure

Dr. Champion and her staff are experienced in breast implant removal which requires leveraged expertise in some cases that may not be uncovered until the time of surgery. Dr. Champion takes every precaution necessary to reduce the possibility of complexity that may occur in breast implant removal procedures. Some breast implants removal procedures are very simple, others may be complex. Plastic and reconstructive expertise may be required in breast implant removal. Dr. Champion is highly experienced in both areas. There are primarily four steps involved in the procedure:

Anesthesia

Breast implant removal patients will receive anesthesia to provide the greatest comfort during the breast surgery. Dr. Champion and you will decide on the type of anesthesia that you will receive at the time of your private consultation.

Incision

Breast revision surgery may usually be performed in the same incision location as the breast augmentation procedure, providing the incision was originally made in the breast crease. Dr. Champion will review the appropriate incision choice for you at the time of consultation.

Breast Implant Removal Technique

During this type of breast surgery procedure, Dr. Champion will reopen the incision area or create a new one under the crease of the breast. Then, she will delicately slip the breast implant out and may use a layered suturing technique deep within the breast tissue to help support the repositioning of breast tissue for a more normal appearance. If a new breast implant is being placed, it will be slipped into the breast pocket through the incision. Depending on any complexities that may occur during surgery, Dr. Champion will use reconstructive techniques as necessary. Finally, the incision will be closed with sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape. The results of breast implant removal are apparent following the procedure and improve to a refined appearance over time.

Breast Implant Removal Recovery

Breast implant removal recovery requires delicate attention, but patients usually return to most normal activities within five days following the procedure. Dr. Champion will provide you with a list of instructions to follow for an enhanced recovery period. These instructions will include: medications to take and avoid, dates to return to the office, hygiene recommendations, incision care, and the types of activities to perform or avoid in the weeks following breast implant removal surgery.

Breast implant removal is much like any other medical procedure. There are risks associated with the procedure and limitations in the procedure. In some cases, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure and another surgery may be necessary. In rare cases, complications may arise, but can be managed when immediately reported to Dr. Champion.

Complications include: unfavorable scarring, bleeding (hematoma), infection, poor incision healing, breast contour irregularities, breast asymmetry, excessive breast firmness, pain, deep vein thrombosis, nipple and breast sensation changes that may be temporary or permanent, tissue death (fat necrosis) or fluid accumulation.

The breast implant removal results may change with age, pregnancy, weight loss or weight gain. For these reasons, you may want to revise the results of your procedure with a secondary procedure over time. In the meantime, breast implant removal results are usually satisfactory. Over time, scars from the incision will fade.
