The Facial Implant Procedure

Dr. Champion and her staff will review every option for treatment through plastic surgery to fit your aesthetic goals for enhancement of the chin, cheeks and/or jaw. Your goals and our dedicated care are our fundamental concerns. There are primarily four steps involved in the facial implant procedure, including:

The Anesthesia

Facial implant patients will receive anesthesia to feel comfortable during the procedure. Dr. Champion will discuss options available at the time of an initial consultation.

The Incision

The location for facial implant incisions depends on the goals of treatment. Dr. Champion will review incision options that are appropriate for your desired outcome at the time of consultation which may include, but not be limited to:

• Cheek implants may be placed during other facial plastic surgery procedures through the same incision locations. Alternatively, cheek implants may be placed through an incision located inside your upper lip or your lower eyelid.
• Chin implant incisions may be inside the mouth along the rim of the lower lip or under the chin area.
• Jaw implant incisions are located on one side of the lower lip.

The Facial Implant Technique

During the facial implant surgery, Dr. Champion will create a pocket in which to place the implant and then slip the implant into position. Dr. Champion will then close the incision with tiny removable or absorbable sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape. She may also apply a dressing over the affected area.

Facial Implant Surgery Recovery

Facial implant surgery recovery requires special care. Patients usually return to normal activities within a week following the procedure. The results of the facial implant surgery are evident when swelling and bruising subsides. Dr. Champion will provide you with a list of instructions to follow to help avoid complications and provide for an optimal recovery. These instructions will include: medications to take, dates to return to the office, hygiene, care for incisions, and the types of activities to perform or avoid in the weeks following facial implant surgery.

Facial implant surgery usually results in a positive outcome, but there is no guarantee in the results of the procedure. In some cases, it may not be possible to achieve fully satisfactory results with a single surgical procedure and another surgery may be necessary. In rare cases, complications may arise, but can be managed when immediately reported to Dr. Champion.

Rare complications include: blood clot, infection, excessive scar tissue, asymmetry between the treatment area and rest of face, pain, temporary or permanent numbness, repositioning or extrusion of the facial implant.

Age may influence the appearance of your facial implant over time. However, Dr. Champion's patients are usually satisfied with the outcome of their redefined appearance that provides for better balance in the face.
