Otoplasty or Ear Pinning Surgery: Enhancement in Life

Ear Pinning Surgery, also known as Otoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to improve the appearance of the ears. Children commonly undergo ototplasty surgery between the ages of 4 and 14, but both youths and adults seek out this procedure. Otoplasty may be performed to address one of several types of concerns, including:

• Bringing ears closer to the head, known as ear pinning
• Improve the size of enlarged ears or ear lobes
• Repair lopped ears, signified by an ear tip that folds forward and down

The Ear Surgery Procedure

Dr. Champion and her staff will prepare you for the procedure in every way through an initial consultation, pre-operative planning meeting, the procedure itself and post-operative care. Your (and your child's) personal needs, comfort and safety are our concerns. There are primarily four steps that are involved in the ear surgery procedure, including:

The Anesthesia

Ear surgery patients will receive anesthesia to feel comfortable for the procedure. Dr. Champion will discuss the options available and help you or your child decide on which type of anesthesia will be best. General anesthesia is often recommended for young children so they remain asleep for the duration of the procedure.

The Incision

The location for an ear surgery incision depends on the goals of treatment. Usually, a small incision is made on the backside of the ear. Dr. Champion will review incision options that are appropriate for your desired outcome at the time of consultation.

The Ear Surgery Technique

During ear surgery, Dr. Champion will expose the ear cartilage through the incision to reshape the cartilage and reposition it in place. Alternatively, Dr. Champion will not reshape the ear cartilage, but will reposition the ear for a better position. In both techniques, Dr. Champion may trim excess skin away and close the incision with tiny removable or absorbable sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape. Dr. Champion will treat both ears to provide an optimal appearance in every case.

Ear Surgery Recovery

Ear surgery recovery requires special attention. Patients usually return to normal activities within a week following the procedure. The results of the ear surgery are evident when swelling and bruising subsides. Dr. Champion will provide you with a list of instructions to follow to help avoid complications and provide for a quality recovery. These instructions will include: medications to take, dates to return to the office, hygiene, care for incisions, and the types of activities to perform or avoid in the weeks following ear surgery.

Ear surgery usually results in a positive outcome, but there is no guarantee in the procedure. In some cases, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure and another surgery may be necessary. In rare cases, complications may arise, but can be managed when immediately reported to Dr. Champion.

Rare complications include: blood clot, infection, excessive scar tissue, asymmetry between the ears, pain, temporary or permanent numbness.

Age may influence the appearance of your ear surgery over time. However, Dr. Champion's patients are usually fully satisfied with the outcome of their reshaped ears that provide for a more harmonious appearance with the face.
