Facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure which improves the signs of facial aging and provides a more youthful appearance. The benefits of the facelift include:

The Facelift Procedure

Dr. Champion and her staff will help prepare you for every step in the facelift procedure. Your comfort and safety are our primary concerns. There are primarily four steps that are involved in the facelift procedure, including:

The Anesthesia

Facelift patients will receive anesthesia to bring comfort to the procedure. Dr. Champion will discuss the type of anesthesia that you may receive at the time of initial consultation.

The Incision

A facelift is performed through inconspicuous incision locations that may be traditional in nature, limited and/or for the treatment of the lower face and neck.

• Traditional facelift incision often begins in the hairline at the temples, continues around the ear and ends in the lower scalp.
• Limited facelift procedures use shorter incisions at the temples, continuing around the ear
• Sagging jowls, loose neck skin and fat accumulation under the chin may be improved with a neck lift involving an incision in front of the ear lobe and wrapping around behind the ear ending in the lower scalp. There may be a second incision under the chin as well.

Dr. Champion will review incision options that are appropriate for your desired outcome at the time of consultation.

The Facelift Technique

During the facelift procedure, Dr. Champion may reposition, redistribute, and sculpt fat on the face, jowls and neck. Then, she will reposition deeper tissue layers of the face, such as muscle, to give a longer lasting lift. Finally, Dr. Champion will re-drape the skin over the uplifted facial contours, trim excess skin and close the incision with sutures or skin adhesives.

Facelift Recovery

Facelift recovery requires special care following the procedure. Patients usually return to normal activities within seven to ten days following the procedure. The results of facelift are apparent after swelling and bruising subsides. Dr. Champion will provide you with a list of instructions to follow for an optimal recovery experience. These instructions will include: medications to take, dates to return to the office, hygiene, care for incisions, and the types of activates to perform or avoid in the weeks following facelift surgery.

The practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science. Although good results are expected, there is no guarantee. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure and another surgery may be necessary. In rare cases, a complication may arise, but can be managed when immediately reported to Dr. Champion.

Rare complications include: unfavorable scarring, bleeding, infection, poor incision healing, fluid accumulation, pain, temporary or permanent numbness, correctable hair loss at incision location, fat tissue death (fat necrosis), skin loss, facial nerve injury, skin contour irregularities, facial asymmetry, or deep vein thrombosis.

A facelift and your face will continue to age over the course of your lifetime. For these reasons, you may want to have a second facelift ten to fifteen years following the initial procedure. In the meantime, you can expect to have long lasting results. Dr. Champion's patients have found satisfaction with their new image through a more youthful, rested appearance.
