Juvederm

What is Juvederm and What does it Do?

Juvederm is a facial filler used to fill out facial wrinkles including those between the nose and the corners of the lips (nasolabial folds) also known as “smile lines.” It is also used to fill those areas of the face that have lost fat during the aging process, resulting in an angular and sometimes sagging face. Juvederm can be used to plump lips and to smooth wrinkles under the eyes. The basic component of Juvederm, hyaluronic acid, is a natural contributor to smooth facial lines and with Juvederm, it is being restored to levels that have been reduced with age. Has it been Approved for Safety?

It is a gel that contains primarily hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in human skin and muscle that contributes to skin hydration and volume. The FDA approved it in 2006 for cosmetic use in treating nasiolabial folds. It has become one of the most popular facial fillers in the United States, competing with Restylane, Zyplast and Hylaform for the hyaluronic acid filler market. Since being introduced to the facial rejuvenation market, hyaluronic acid injections have become second only to Botox in popularity. There were one million injections of Juvederm and similar fillers performed by U.S. plastic surgeons in 2008.

Is it Permanent?

Juvederm lasts from six months to one year, depending on the patient (and on whom you ask). It functions well for temporary lip augmentation, injected through tiny incisions on the inside corners of the mouth. The biological activity of hyaluronic acid is such that it absorbs water, contributing fullness to the area under the skin. It also binds with collagen and interacts with other cells in such a manner as to cause skin to create new collagen.

Collagen is a fibrous protein that supports skin and is the natural key to that smooth face that comes with youth. The aging process is accompanied by a loss of collagen. Juvederm is one product that is designed to both mimic its effects and generate new collagen within the area where it has been injected. Using a naturally-occurring substance to recreate a youthful appearance is the safest approach to physical rejuvenation – there is no use of substances that are foreign to the human body.

What are the After-Effects?

The injections will cause the usual temporary swelling and bruising around the injection points. Temporary redness will also impact the areas that have been filled with Juvederm; the swelling and inflammation should be gone within a week or so. There is also a history of more serious reactions to Juvederm from people with severe allergies. The manufacturer warns against use of the product with allergenic patients, as will Dr. Champion in your interview. Allergic reactions include facial lumps known as granulomas which will require additional treatment by a physician.

Why Juvederm?

Juvederm is a versatile filler. Cosmetic surgeons are comfortable using it to augment both lips and cheeks. Its primary use treating the smile lines between mouth and nose has proven to be effective, and doctors have begun to apply it to areas beneath the eyes. It works for eyes with hollowed areas beneath them; it is less effective for lined and puffy lower lids because it is a filler. It is also generally found to be a painful injection process; although accepting a local anesthetic is probably advisable.

Juvederm’s major competitor, Restylane, has a lower concentration of hyaluronic acid and has higher viscosity, making it thicker and more difficult as an injectable. Juvederm restores a fluid that is critical to smooth, youthful skin and causes it to increase in volume. It has proven itself as an effective filler for dozens of Dr. Champion’s patients.
