Male Breast Reduction: Enhancement in Life

Male Breast Reduction, also known as gynecomastia surgery or male reduction mammaplasty, is a surgery that creates a more masculine appearance by correcting over-developed or enlarged breasts in men. Men interested in the procedure may have enlarged breasts due to hormonal changes, heredity conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs. Enlarged breasts often cause emotional discomfort and may impair a man's self confidence. Male breast reduction surgery is a common procedure among men of all ages and may provide numerous benefits, including:

  • Reduce the size of the breasts
  • Improves breast sagginess
  • Improves the appearance of stretching around the areola

Surgical correction of gynecomastia is most suitable for men whose condition cannot be corrected with other medical treatments. Dr. Champion's goal is to help reduce the embarrassment that causes some men to avoid various physical activities, and intimacy as well.

The Procedure

The approach to the male breast reduction procedure depends upon numerous factors. Enlarged breasts may consist of excess localized fat, excess glandular tissue, or a combination of the two. Males with enlarged breasts may also have excess skin, breast sagging and an inappropriately located or shaped nipple. All of which may require treatment. Dr. Champion will select the approach to the procedure that is most suitable for your particular case. She and her staff will take every pre-operative step to prepare you for the breast reduction procedure as well. Your privacy, comfort and quality care are their foremost concerns. There are primarily four steps in the breast reduction procedure.

The Anesthesia

Male breast reduction patients will receive anesthesia to provide the greatest comfort for the procedure. Dr. Champion will decide on the type of anesthesia that you will receive at the time of an initial consultation. Anesthesia choices include: intravenous sedation and general anesthesia.

The Incision

Male Breast reduction incisions may be made around the areola or under the armpit. Dr. Champion will decide upon the appropriate incision location at the time of the initial consultation.

The Liposuction Technique

If your gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, Dr. Champion may use liposuction techniques alone to treat the condition. This requires insertion of a cannula, a thin hollow tube, through several small incisions. The controlled back-and-forth motion of the cannula loosens excess fat, which is then gently removed from the body by vacuum suction. There are various liposuction techniques. Dr. Champion will select the approach most appropriate for you.

The Excision

Dr. Champion uses excision techniques where glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct enlarged breasts. Excision also is necessary to reduce the areola and repositioning the nipple for a more natural male contour. Sometimes gynecomastia is treated with both liposuction and excision. Dr. Champion will then reshape and lift the breasts to an appropriate position. Finally, she will close the incision with sutures and/or skin adhesives.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery

Male breast reduction recovery requires special care following the procedure, but patients usually return to most normal activities within a couple of days following the procedure. Dr. Champion will provide you with a list of instructions to follow for recovery. These instructions will include, but not be limited to: medications to take and avoid, dates to return to the office, hygiene recommendations, care for incisions, and the types of activities to perform or avoid in the weeks following breast reduction surgery.

Male breast reduction is a personal decision that requires maturity and understanding for both the advantages and risks of the procedure. In some cases, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a one procedure and another surgery may be necessary. In rare cases, complication may arise, but can be managed when immediately reported to Dr. Champion.

Rare complication include: unfavorable scarring, bleeding (hematoma), infection, poor incision healing, breast contour irregularities, breast asymmetry, pain, deep vein thrombosis, nipple and breast sensation changes that may be temporary or permanent and tissue death (fat necrosis).

The results of the male breast reduction procedure are immediately visible. The incision lines will fade and most of the time, are not apparent. Dr. Champion's patients have found satisfaction with the reduced size of their breasts for a long period of time.

The male breast reduction procedure results may change with age, metabolic changes, weight loss or weight gain. For these reasons, you may require a revision surgery or a secondary procedure to maintain the benefits. In the meantime, you will experience greater comfort with your newly refined appearance for many years to come.
