The Procedure

Neck lifts are also sought out by people with excess fat around the neck that won’t respond to dieting or exercise. For this element of the surgery, two incisions are made behind the ears along with one under the chin. Through these openings the doctor can use liposuction to remove excess fat. Bands of excess fat that have formed around the neck can be removed, followed by tightening of the skin. If necessary the doctor will remove some of the skin and reattach the tightened remainder with sutures.

Sagging neck features are the result of weakened muscles in the area that slowly lose their elasticity as we age. The surgeon may tighten these muscles by removing one end and reattaching, possibly removing a section of the muscle in the process. Both muscles and the skin layered over them are reduced in order to remove the loose, “wattled” neck that often accompanies aging.

Technology for Neck Lifts

Some cosmetic plastic surgeons now use endoscopes, or tiny cameras that are inserted through a small incision. With the endoscope and liposuction equipment fat can be removed; the muscles can be tightened without a wider incision. In some instances Botox is used to treat bands of fat around the neck. Botox essentially paralyzes the muscles that have contracted to form the bands around the neck. When they are relaxed the banding effect is reduced; when combined with liposuction the fat is removed as well.

The Results

A neck lift tightens the skin around the neck and the muscles beneath the skin, if necessary. A neck lift may be dealing simultaneously with excess fat beneath the skin and skin that is sagging and loose due to aging and loss of muscle tension. Both procedures combine to create a slimmer, more youthful neck. The procedure also tightens the area beneath the chin so that double chins are reduced, or excess skin behind the chin is tightened to eliminate those loose folds.
