Nose Surgery Procedure

Dr. Champion and her staff will prepare you for the procedure in every way through an initial consultation, pre-operative planning meeting, the procedure itself and post-operative care. Your personal needs, comfort and safety are Dr. Champion’s primary concerns. There are four major steps that are involved in the nose surgery procedure, including:

Anesthesia

Nose surgery patients will receive anesthesia to feel very comfortable for the procedure. Dr. Champion will discuss options of anesthesia at the time of an initial consultation.

Incision

The locations for nose surgery incisions depend on the type of technique being used in the procedures: open or closed. The closed technique involves incisions located inside the nose and the open method involves an incision is made across the columella, the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. Additional incisions may be placed in the natural creases of the nostrils to alter their size. Dr. Champion will review incision options that are appropriate for your desired outcome at the time of consultation.

Nose Surgery Technique

During nose surgery, Dr. Champion will lift the soft tissues that cover the nose in order to reshape the underlying structure of the nose. Nose reshaping may involve reducing underlying structures such as cartilage or bone or augmenting certain areas, depending upon the goal. When nose augmentation is the desire, Dr. Champion will transfer cartilage from another area of the body such as the ear to the location of the nose that requires augmentation. In cases involving a deviated septum, the septum is straitened and the projections inside the nose are reduced to improve breathing. Dr. Champion may also use incisions and suturing techniques in the natural creases of the nostrils to alter their size. Finally, Dr. Champion will re-drape the skin and close the incision with tiny removable or absorbable sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape. Nose Surgery Recovery

Nose surgery recovery requires special attention. Patients usually return to most normal activities within a few days following the procedure. The results of the nose surgery are evident when swelling and bruising subsides. Dr. Champion will provide you with a list of instructions to follow to help avoid complications and provide for a quality recovery. These instructions will include: medications to take, dates to return to the office, hygiene recommendations, care for incisions, and the types of activities to perform or avoid in the weeks following nose surgery.

The practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science. Although good results are expected, there is no guarantee. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure and another surgery may be necessary. In rare cases, complication may arise, but can be managed when immediately reported to Dr. Champion.

Rare complications include: infection, poor incision healing, bleeding (hematoma), fluid accumulation, pain, deep vein thrombosis, temporary or permanent numbness, nose asymmetry, nasal airway interference, skin discoloration and skin contour irregularities.

Age or weight loss may influence the appearance of your nose surgery over time, which may require a revision surgery. However, Dr. Champion’s patients are usually satisfied with the outcome of their reshaped nose, giving them an enhanced profile that adds balance to their face.
