Eyelid Surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. This surgery gives a rejuvenated appearance to the surrounding area of your eyes, making you look more rested and alert. The rewards of eyelid surgery include:
Improves loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes resulting in impaired vision
Removes excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper or lower eyelids
Improves under eye bags
Repairs lower eyelid droopiness
Improves excess skin and some fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
Eyelid surgery will improve the appearance of the eyes and can improve functionality for people with vision impairment due to droopy upper eyelids, but may not be the right procedure for everyone. People interested in eyelid surgery should inform Dr. Champion about previous and current medical conditions at the time of initial consultation. These conditions include, but are not limited to: glaucoma, dry eye or a detached retina, thyroid disorders such as Graves’ disease and under or overactive thyroid, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure or other circulatory disorders or diabetes.
EYELID SURGERY PROCEDURE
Dr. Champion and her staff will take every precaution to prepare you for every step in the eyelid procedure including the initial consultation, pre- operative planning, the operation itself and post- operative follow up. High quality care, comfort and safety are Dr. Champion’s primary concerns. There are primarily four steps that are involved in the eyelid procedure, including:
Eyelid surgery patients will receive anesthesia so they are very comfortable for the procedure. Dr. Champion will discuss options for anesthesia at the time of an initial consultation.
Eyelid surgery incisions are designed to fall within the natural lines and creases of the eyelid area so they are concealed. Upper eye lids with excessive droopiness requires an incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Lower eyelids have an incision made just below the lower eye lash line. Alternatively, lower eyelids may have an incision made inside the lower eyelid. Dr. Champion will review incision options that are appropriate for your desired outcome at the time of consultation.
Eyelid Surgery Technique
During eyelid surgery, Dr. Champion may reposition, redistribute and/or remove fat deposits above or below the eye. Then, she will tighten eyelid muscles and tissue as well as remove any excess skin. Finally, Dr. Champion will close the incision with tiny removable or absorbable sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Eyelid surgery recovery requires special attention after the procedure. Patients usually return to most normal activities within several days following the procedure. The results of eyelid surgery are gradually apparent after swelling and bruising subsides. Dr. Champion will provide you with a list of instructions to follow to help avoid complications and provide for a quality recovery. These instructions will include: medications to take, dates to return to the office, hygiene recommendations, care for incisions, and the types of activities to perform or avoid in the weeks following eye lid surgery.
The practice of medicine and surgery is not an exact science. Although good results are expected, there is no guarantee. In some situations, it may not be possible to achieve optimal results with a single surgical procedure and another surgery may be necessary. In rare cases, complications may arise, but can be managed when immediately reported to Dr. Champion.
Age, weight loss, and menopause may influence the appearance of your eyelid surgery over time. For these reasons, you may desire to have a revision eyelid procedure later on in life. In the meantime, Dr. Champion’s patients are usually fully satisfied with the results of more youthful, rested eyes that provide balance to their face for many years to come.
