Breast Augmentation Implant Plastic Surgery

unspecified-199x300 Breast Augmentation Implant Plastic Surgery Newport Beach Female Plastic Surgeon | Orange CountyBreast augmentation ranks as the number one cosmetic surgery procedure in the US today, according to the figures provided by the ASPS. Improved surgical techniques, increased customization, and innovative breast implant qualities have made the procedure less invasive and more effective.

Dr. Angela Champion is a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon providing breast augmentation and various other procedures for the breast, body, and face. Patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding communities have an opportunity to receive treatments from Dr. Champion.

Benefits

Women with naturally small breasts, uneven, or asymmetrical breasts and those who want to have more voluptuous looking breasts for cosmetic reasons can benefit the most from breast augmentation implant plastic surgery. Women who have lost one or both breasts due to mastectomy can restore their breast appearance through reconstruction, which involves breast implants.

In cosmetic terms, breast augmentation implant surgery will help to increase fullness in the upper and lower pole of the breasts, accentuate breast projection, and enhance the overall body proportion. Women with sagging breasts may benefit from a combination of breast implants and breast lift. Most women will have improved self-confidence and a more satisfactory life when they have the breasts they desire.

Surgical Procedure

At the time of surgical planning, the breast surgeon will closely engage with the patient to determine the type and size of breast implants, the location of incisions, the placement position of implants in the breast tissue, and whether breast augmentation will be performed alone or in conjunction with breast lift. Once the planning and pre-operative preparation is completed, the surgery will be scheduled.

The surgeon may decide to use general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation to perform breast augmentation. An anesthesiologist or a registered anesthetist nurse will administer general anesthesia, and may remain present throughout the surgery to monitor the patient. Following anesthesia, the surgeon will begin the procedure by placing a discreet incision.

Dr. Champion prefers the incision to be located in one of the two places, which include under the breast along the crease, or along the lower border of the areola. The choice of incision location will be determined according to the type and size of implants, degree of surgery required, and the patient’s unique breast anatomy. Breast implant type, size and shape will be chosen appropriately in close consultation with the patient.

Through the incision, the surgeon will place the implants in one of the two locations, which include under the pectoral muscle or above the pectoral muscle directly behind the breast tissue. Once the implants are adjusted into position, the surgeon will close the incisions with layered sutures. Board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Champion receives patients from Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and nearby areas for breast augmentation.

Recovery

Most patients will be able to return to their normal routine within two to three days following breast augmentation. However, they must avoid vigorous activities or exercises and lifting of heavy weights for a few weeks. Dr. Champion will provide a detailed list of instructions to help ensure a safer and faster recovery.

Breast Augmentation Candidates

shutterstock_113124967-284x300 Breast Augmentation Candidates Newport Beach Female Plastic Surgeon | Orange CountyWomen usually seek breast augmentation surgery for cosmetic purposes, whether to increase the size of naturally small breasts, correct the asymmetry between the breasts, or just to create a more voluptuous breast appearance. In some cases, breast augmentation may also be used as a part of breast reconstruction to restore breasts after a mastectomy.

Dr. Angela Champion is a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon providing breast augmentation and various other surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures. Dr. Champion will carefully assess the candidacy of a woman before recommending breast implant surgery. She provides this procedure to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding communities.

Need for Breast Enlargement

To begin with, the surgeon would like to know why the patient wants to undergo breast augmentation surgery. The patient herself is the only person who can provide a correct answer to this question. The surgeon will be able to make the right recommendations based on the patient’s feedback. Some of the reasons why women want to choose breast augmentation include:

  • To have a more feminine and appealing figure
  • To reverse breast volume loss after pregnancy or weight loss
  • To correct asymmetrical breasts
  • To make the breast size proportionate to other body features
  • To address birth related deformities in one or both breasts
  • To correct micromastia
  • To reconstruct one or both breasts after mastectomy
  • To enhance self-image and personal confidence

An ideal candidate will have a positive mindset, clear aesthetic priorities and realistic expectations from breast augmentation surgery. Board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Champion receives patients from Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and nearby areas.

Health Pre-requisites

The candidate should be in fairly decent health at the time of breast augmentation surgery. To determine her health status, the surgeon will review her detailed medical history and previous surgeries if any, and assess the quality and elasticity of her breast skin. In a few cases, specialized mammograms may be ordered.

The patient should provide her health records and disclose all health related information transparently for her own safety. If she has a history of smoking, or has been using any prescription, or non-prescription medications, herbal supplements and vitamins, she should accurately inform the surgeon about it.

This will allow the surgeon to make an appropriate surgical plan and advise the necessary pre- and post-operative care instructions to the patient. The patient should ideally have a moderate and stable body weight. She should not be suffering from an untreated infection or have a bleeding tendency, and should not be currently pregnant or breastfeeding. The candidate should also be free from any cancerous or pre-cancerous breast tissue.

Minimum Age

Women above the age of 21 are eligible for silicone implants and ultra-cohesive form stable implants. In case of saline implants, the minimum age of the woman should be 18. These age limits have been imposed by the FDA. In exceptional situations, a woman below the age of 18 may undergo breast augmentation to treat congenital deformities or breast tissue injuries.

Breast Augmentation Procedure Steps

shutterstock_107648318-300x263 Breast Augmentation Procedure Steps Newport Beach Female Plastic Surgeon | Orange CountyBreast augmentation is a major cosmetic surgery procedure involving a number of steps. While the surgical techniques to perform this procedure can vary, the overall steps largely remain unchanged. The surgery can be customized to suit the patient’s specific needs.

At the time of initial consultation, the surgeon will discuss about the steps involved in breast augmentation in order to familiarize the patient with the surgery. This will help mitigate her pre-operative anxiety and concern. Board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Angela Champion provides breast augmentation to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding communities.

Anesthesia

The first step in the breast augmentation surgery is to place the patient under anesthesia. In most cases, general anesthesia will be used, and it may be administered by an anesthesiologist or a nurse anesthetist. The patient will be brought out of anesthesia once the surgery is over, but may feel grogginess and other side effects for a few hours.

In most cases, the patient may be allowed to return home the same day of surgery. However, she should arrange for someone to driver her back home once the surgeon determines that she is fit to leave. She should preferably have someone to accompany her for the first one or two days at home to assist with the daily chores.

Placing the Incisions

Following anesthesia, the surgeon will place the incisions in discreet locations, which could be in the breast crease, in the underarm area, around the lower half of the areola, or even in the navel area in a few cases. The goal will be to conceal the incisions and mitigate subsequent visible scarring.

The location and type of incisions will be determined during the surgical planning process. The surgeon will consider the patient’s anatomical and cosmetic needs and make the appropriate recommendations for incision placement. Board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Champion receives patients from Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and nearby areas.

Placing the Implants

The breast implants may be placed in front of the pectoral muscle immediately behind the breast tissue or under the pectoral muscle. The implant placement will be determined after taking into account the implant size, the patient’s breast anatomy and her personal cosmetic goals. The benefits and limitations of each placement option will be discussed with the patient before making a decision.

Wound Closure

After the implants have been placed and adjusted into position in the breast tissue, the surgeon will carefully close the wounds with removable or absorbable sutures. Temporary drain tubes will be placed below the skin in the incision area. The patient will be instructed to keep the incision areas clean and dry to minimize the risk of infection. Strain in the incision areas should be minimal until the healing has progressed.

Bandages and Surgical Bra

The surgeon will cover the breasts with bandages immediately after the surgery to support healing and protect the wound. In a day or two, the bandages will be replaced with a special surgical bra. The patient will be required to wear this bra at all times for a few weeks as per the surgeon’s instructions.

Breast Augmentation Risks and Safety

shutterstock_114357193-300x277 Breast Augmentation Risks and Safety Newport Beach Female Plastic Surgeon | Orange CountyAs per the data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentation currently ranks as the number one cosmetic surgery procedure in the US. Advancements in surgical techniques have helped to make the procedure less invasive and less painful over the years. However, certain risks remain inherent to breast augmentation, just like any other surgery.

During the pre-operative consultation, the surgeon will explain the potential risks and complications involved in breast augmentation. The first goal of a responsible surgeon will be to help the patient make a well-considered decision. Board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Angela Champion provides breast augmentation to patients in Newport Beach, Orange County, CA, and surrounding communities.

Breast Implant Risks

Some risks are unique to the breast augmentation surgery because of the involvement of silicone or saline breast implants.

Capsular Contracture

The surgical placement of breast implants in the body triggers the body’s natural healing mechanism, leading to the formation of scar tissue around the implants. In a few instances, the scar tissue may tend to contract or harden, putting extra pressure on the implants.

Excessive tightening of scar tissue can squeeze the implants, and as a consequence they may lose their shape, position, or get damaged. As the breast capsule hardens, the patient may experience pain or discomfort. In such cases, the surgeon may suggest breast implant replacement or removal procedure.

Implant Rippling

If the implants placed in the breast tissue are fairly large, but the amount of skin available to cover them is limited, it may result in the implant developing folds or creases. This can create a rippling effect on the surface, compromising the natural breast look.

An experienced surgeon will be able to avoid the risk of implant rippling by helping the patient choose the right implant size and shape. Board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Champion receives patients from Houston, Texas and nearby areas.

Implant Shifting or Rupture

The implant may shift from its original position in exceptional situations, soon after the breast augmentation was performed. The risk of displacement will increase in case of larger implants, while the risk of rupture is common to implants of all sizes.

When the rupture occurs in case of saline implants, the implant will immediately deflate and the problem will be noticed. But in the event of a silicone implant rupture, the damage may be noticed only during a breast MRI. These conditions can be addressed with a breast revision surgery.

Surgery-related Risks

Some of the risks in breast augmentation are common to most surgeries.

Infection

The risk of infection will be higher during and immediately after the implant procedure. The surgical facility should have a sterile surgical environment to ensure safety against infection. The surgeon may prescribe antibiotics for a few days during recovery to minimize the infection risks after the surgery.

Changed Sensation in Nipples

Altered and a strange sensation, sensitivity, or an annoying numbness may occur in the nipple area after breast augmentation. Although the condition typically resolves itself over a short period of time, in a few instances, the altered feeling or sensation may stretch itself out for a while or even be definitively indefinite. The latter circumstance is rare but it is a possibility.
